A story about Adoption
for your 5th Grader.

Golden dust danced on the breeze in Calamity Kate’s frontier town, where the bright sun peeked over rows of cornflowers by the creek. Calamity Kate, a spunky cowgirl with a sharp mind and a big heart, rose early each day to care for her horse, Rusty, before riding off to greet the morning.

One dawn, Kate’s parents shared thrilling and bewildering news: they were adopting a new child. Calamity Kate’s heart pounded like wild hooves, and her mind flooded with questions she couldn't voice just yet.

“Adopting?” Calamity Kate murmured, wringing her hat in her hands. “Is this rider joining our family for good?” she asked, trying to appear brave even as her voice shook. Her parents nodded, sharing gentle smiles, but Kate only felt more confused.

Longing for clarity, Calamity Kate saddled Rusty and galloped into town. The dusty road led to the lively center: a general store brimming with barrels of flour and shelves of dried goods, and next door, the bustling saloon alive with chatter.

Inside the general store, a dulled horseshoe hung over the entry, etched with tiny scratch marks telling tales of many travels. Its metal gleamed faintly like it held hidden wisdom about life’s twists and turns.

Calamity Kate paused behind a barrel as she overheard loud voices drifting from the saloon. The old-timers were swapping stories again, and Kate stomped nervously, wondering if anyone there had advice about adoption. She gathered her courage and stepped inside.

“I’ve seen families grow in all sorts of ways,” one old-timer drawled, his voice gentle. “Sometimes, the new kid just needs a fair chance and an open heart,” offered another. Seeing Calamity Kate’s worry, they reminded her that talking about your feelings can help you feel less alone.

Near the saloon’s bar, a threadbare deck of cards lay scattered, as if abandoned mid-game by folks too busy discussing important matters to finish playing.
