The Saddle of Family

A story about Adoption

for your 5th Grader.

Calamity Kate standing beside her trusted horse, Rusty, near the creek cradled in cornflowers. In the background, golden fields stretch under a rising sun.

Golden dust danced on the breeze in Calamity Kate’s frontier town, where the bright sun peeked over rows of cornflowers by the creek. Calamity Kate, a spunky cowgirl with a sharp mind and a big heart, rose early each day to care for her horse, Rusty, before riding off to greet the morning.

Calamity Kate’s parents gently talking to her in front of the family’s simple ranch house. In the background, a few chickens peck at the dry ground.

One dawn, Kate’s parents shared thrilling and bewildering news: they were adopting a new child. Calamity Kate’s heart pounded like wild hooves, and her mind flooded with questions she couldn't voice just yet.

Calamity Kate fiddling with her wide-brimmed hat while speaking to her parents. In the background, the open doorway of the ranch house stands behind them.

“Adopting?” Calamity Kate murmured, wringing her hat in her hands. “Is this rider joining our family for good?” she asked, trying to appear brave even as her voice shook. Her parents nodded, sharing gentle smiles, but Kate only felt more confused.

Calamity Kate riding through the dusty main street, passing the general store and noisy saloon. In the background, townspeople bustle about their daily errands.

Longing for clarity, Calamity Kate saddled Rusty and galloped into town. The dusty road led to the lively center: a general store brimming with barrels of flour and shelves of dried goods, and next door, the bustling saloon alive with chatter.

A battered horseshoe displayed above the store’s entrance, shiny in the dusty light. In the background, rows of shelves are filled with tin cans and supplies.

Inside the general store, a dulled horseshoe hung over the entry, etched with tiny scratch marks telling tales of many travels. Its metal gleamed faintly like it held hidden wisdom about life’s twists and turns.

Calamity Kate cautiously pushing open the swinging saloon doors. In the background, a few patrons sit at wooden tables under a brass chandelier.

Calamity Kate paused behind a barrel as she overheard loud voices drifting from the saloon. The old-timers were swapping stories again, and Kate stomped nervously, wondering if anyone there had advice about adoption. She gathered her courage and stepped inside.

Calamity Kate in conversation with the old-timers, who lean forward with kind expressions. In the background, peanut shells and wagon wheels decorate the saloon floor.

“I’ve seen families grow in all sorts of ways,” one old-timer drawled, his voice gentle. “Sometimes, the new kid just needs a fair chance and an open heart,” offered another. Seeing Calamity Kate’s worry, they reminded her that talking about your feelings can help you feel less alone.

A worn deck of playing cards with curled edges rests on the bar’s scratched surface. In the background, a few dusty stools stand empty beside the bar.

Near the saloon’s bar, a threadbare deck of cards lay scattered, as if abandoned mid-game by folks too busy discussing important matters to finish playing.
