A story about Reading
for your 1st Grader.

Nessie Sparkles was a shimmering Loch Ness Monster who loved to read stories. She lived by the big lake called Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. Every day, she saw airplanes flying high above the water.

One morning, Nessie Sparkles watched the shiny planes glide through the clouds. She wondered, “How do they fly so fast?” She thought about opening a book to learn more, because reading helped her find answers.

The airport runway gleamed under the sun. Planes took off with loud roars. Smaller planes and bigger planes lined up to soar away into the sky.

Suddenly, a young boy named Jamie ran over. He pointed to the planes and said, “Those are planes. They fly through the sky like you swim in the lake!” Nessie Sparkles smiled and said, “Can I try it?”

Jamie led Nessie Sparkles to meet Mr. Ferguson, the friendly pilot. “Hello!” Mr. Ferguson said. “You want to learn about planes? I’ll show you how wings and engines work!” Nessie Sparkles wiggled her tail happily.

Mr. Ferguson showed Nessie Sparkles the airplane’s wings. “These wings help the plane lift into the air,” he explained. Nessie Sparkles asked, “Does reading books help you learn to fly?” Mr. Ferguson nodded. “Yes, reading is how I learned the rules!”

Inside the airplane, the seat was small and had many buttons on the armrest. It was made for humans, not for a long tail.

“Oh dear,” said Nessie Sparkles, trying to fit her tail inside the plane. She twisted and turned, but it was too long! “This is harder than I thought,” she said, feeling worried.
